History Quilter Podcast Episode 28 Longarm Machines

Just a quick blogpost to let you know that History Quilter Podcast Episode 28 where I speak about the history of Longarm Quilting Machines is now available on Podbean, iTunes and Stitcher Radio.  You can also listen directly from this page with the link on the right.

Here's a photo of the Cinnamon Rolls I stated to talk about in the episode but then became distracted by one of my boys.  I think they both walked in about 10 times...

I'll be back later to add in the content of what I spoke about but for now I'm off to take an online midterm and get ready for class.
Good luck with your Monday,
Susan

  2. Just listened, great episode!! Don't forget the current most famous fan fiction: 50 Shades of Grey...based (loosely) on the Twilight series.

    1. I read 50 Shades as it was coming out chapter by chapter. I love how everyone can't stop talking about it now - except when my mother asked me if I'd heard about it. Aaargh! Wanted to crawl under a rock and hide.

  3. Loved hearing the Russian Man-child, lol! I'm going to listen again today to pick up the things I missed the first time around (interruptions). About fan fiction - the link I sent you a long time ago for The Plan is a fanfic story. Pretty short and funny, give it a try!

  4. My daughter loves the fan fiction; it doesn't do much for me..

In my next life [or if a genie grants me a wish] I want to come back as someone who like fruits and veggies so that I can appreciate the colorful meals that you post. I also want to be able to sew a scant 1/4 inch, but that's a different story.

I love the effect of long-arm quilting, but, like you, have no need to own one EVEN if I had the room and the money [which I don't.] They remind me of race cars in size, shape and potential for disaster. I'll keep the local Long-Armers in business instead.

    All the best.

  5. Hey Suz! I greatly enjoyed this episode. I had to chime in on your fan fiction reference.. :-) While I have a basic opposition to the whole idea of fan fiction, because I feel a story universe is the property of the author and should not be jacked with (especially in reference to changing the story like putting Draco and Harry into a romantic relationship) there are exceptions to that rule. For instance, the writer H.P. Lovecraft who is pretty much the father of science fiction, and fantasy as we know it, was a huge supporter of people using the mythos he created in order to stage their own stories. The prime example being "The Call Of Cthulhu" which is considered his masterpiece. Many, many writers since and now use the Cthulhu mythos as a setting for their own stories. You could almost say HPL invented fan fiction.

  6. Heya! I listened to the episode earlier this week. I do rent a longarm and they charged me $160 for the one-on-one 6 hour course to teach me how to use the machine. After that it was $15 per hour which includes anytime I'm on the machine - loading or quilting or unloading. If I have to stop and eat they still charge me.

I'm looking for a closer place to do my quilts or I may find a longarmer and just pay her to send them out.

Typically it takes me 45-60 minutes to load a twin size onto the frame before I can even start quilting. Then it takes me another 60 minutes to quilt it if I'm just meandering. Triple that time if I'm doing a pantograph. Quilting one quilt can quickly add up to $60-90 per quilt doing it yourself. When I was meandering I was able to get two or three done in one time period without a lunch break (usually 5-6 hours).

    Enjoyed this episode!
